Lucha libre (spanish for “free wrestling”) began in Mexico in the early 1900s. The masks used by the luchadores evoke images of Aztec gods, heroes and animals.
In the 1940s a silver-masked wrestler known as El Santo became a legend and folkhero through his appearances in comic books and movies. Today the sport has expanded into the US and is gaining popularity around the world due to the colourful masks, costumes and the high-flying acrobatics used by the fighters.
